Frequently Asked Questions
How do I contact ASU SEMS? If you are experiencing an emergency, call 911 immediately. Can ASU SEMS come to my event in case someone gets hurt?
Yes. We call this "standby" service, and we can send one or more crews out to your event depending on the turnout. ASU SEMS does not charge for this service. To see if we have crews available during your event fill out a Standby Request. For more detailed information, or to fill out a Standby Request, visit the Standby Request page. Since ASU SEMS is all student run, will I receive the same level of care as I would from an ambulance company? Absolutely. All ASU SEMS members who respond to medical emergencies are certified to the EMT-Basic level, and we have to pass the exact same exams as any other EMT-Basic in the state of Arizona. In addition, ASU SEMS members attend training sessions throughout the year to keep us sharp on our skills and to learn new skills that aren't necessarily taught to other EMTs. I'm concerned about people finding out about my emergency if I call ASU SEMS. What is your privacy policy? As an EMS agency, we are bound by federal regulations to maintain patient privacy. By law, the only people we are allowed to share your information with is an agency to whom we transfer care (Fire Department paramedics, an ambulance crew, or doctors at the Health Center). We follow HIPAA and FERPA guidelines. Where will I be taken if I call ASU SEMS? Where you are transported depends on when you call and how severe your injury or illness is. If you have a relatively minor ailment, and you call us during regular Health Center hours, you have the option to sign a refusal of ambulance transportation, and if you desire, we will attempt to arrange a ride for you to the Health Center. However, if you have a more serious injury or illness or you call after regular Health Center hours, you will be transported by PMT Ambulance (or another private or Fire Department ambulance in rare cases) to the most appropriate facility. How much does it cost to call ASU SEMS? Absolutely nothing. We are all-volunteer, and we provide our emergency services free of charge. However, if it is necessary to call the Fire Department and/or an ambulance, they will charge you for their services. Will the police come if I call ASU SEMS? When you call emergency from ASU, you will automatically be routed through the ASU Police Department. They will usually forward the call to the Fire Dispatch center, who calls us. ASU Police will usually not respond to medical emergencies, but if it is a major or violent emergency or it involves traffic, they may respond based on their judgement of the call. Their primary reason for responding is to keep the scene safe for ASU EMS members and other emergency personnel. ASU SEMS will not call for police backup unless we feel the scene is unsafe or we need crowd/traffic control. |
